Hansel y gretel
1.Many years ago, there was a woodcutter. He lived deep in the forest with his wife. She was a kind and gentle woman. They had two children: Hansel and Gretel. The family did not have much money, but their home was always cozy and warm, and the children always had soup and bread to eat. They never went hungry. One year, there was a terribly cold winter, and Hansel and Gretel's mother became ill and died
2.In time the woodcutter married another woman, but she was not kind and gentle. She was cruel and selfish. She wanted to be rich, and she wanted to eat fancy foods like roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas, corn, lemon cakes, and exotic fruits from sunny lands. She was angry that they could only afford soup and bread for every meal. "Soup and bread! Soup and bread! Every day! Soup and bread! I am so tired of soup and bread!" she complained.
3.The stepmother was especially cruel to Hansel and Gretel because she believed they were the reason the family was so poor. "You children eat too much! It's your fault that we only have soup and bread!" She wanted the children gone. One day, while the woodcutter was out cutting wood, the stepmother called Hansel and Gretel into the kitchen of their cottage. "There is not enough food to make soup for dinner”, said the stepmother. "We will all go hungry tonight. Go into the forest and pick some mushrooms to make a mushroom soup. I know where the best mushrooms grow…"
4.Then she gave them the most confusing directions she could think of. She knew they would never be able to find their way home. "Walk north for two hours, turn left at the tall trees, walk east for twenty minutes, continue straight ahead, cross the stream, turn right onto the main road, go through the hole in the fence, walk under the bridge (watch out for the troll), and then three miles inside the forest, you will find some mushrooms under a tree. Go now so you can be back in time for dinner." Hansel and Gretel were scared. They knew the forest was deep and dark, and that it was easy to get lost.
1.Hace muchos años, había un leñador. Vivía en los adentros del bosque con su esposa. Ella era una mujer amable y gentil. Tenían dos hijos: Hansel y Gretel. La familia no tenía mucho dinero, pero su hogar siempre era acogedor y calientito y los niños siempre tenían sopa y pan que comer. Nunca pasaron hambre. De repente un año, hubo un invierno espeluznantemente frío, y la madre de Hansel y Gretel se enfermó y falleció.
2.Pasó el tiempo y eventualmente el leñador se casó con otra mujer, pero ella no era amable ni gentil. Ella era cruel y egoísta. Ella quería ser rica, y quería comer comida elegante como carne asada, puré de papa, chícharos, elote, panes de limón, y frutas exóticas de las tierras soleadas. Se molestaba porque solo podían pagar por sopa y pan para cada alimento. “¡Sopa y pan! ¡Sopa y pan! ¡Todos los días! ¡Estoy cansada de siempre comer sopa y pan!” se quejaba.
3. La madrastra era especialmente cruel con Hansel y Gretel porque creía que ellos eran la razón por que eran tan pobres. “¡Comen demasiado para ser niños! ¡Es su culpa que solo comemos sopa y pan!” Quería que desaparecieran. Un día, cuando el leñador estaba fuera cortando leña, la madrastra llamó a Hansel y Gretel a la cocina de su pequeño hogar. “No hay suficiente comida para cenar hoy,” dijo la madrastra. “Todos vamos a pasar hombre anoche. Vayan al bosque y busquen champiñones para hacer sopa de champiñones. Sé donde crecen los mejores champiñones…”
4.Después les dio las instituciones más confusas que se le ocurrieron. Sabía que no podrían volver a encontrar su camino a casa. “Caminen hacia el norte por dos horas, den vuelta a la izquierda al ver los árboles altos, caminen por veinte minutos más, sigan derecho, crucen el río, den vuelta a la derecha hacia la calle principal, pasen por el hoyo en la barda, caminen por debajo del puente (cuidado con el troll), y tres millas adentro del bosque, bajo un árbol encontrarán los mejores champiñones. Vayan ahora para que puedan regresar antes de la cena.” Hansel y Gretel tenían miedo. Sabían que el bosque era profundo y oscuro, y que era muy fácil perderse.
